Event Planning Advice: How do you Know You're Meant to be an Event Planner?

Dear Star,

I think I want to become an event planner but I have major doubts about my abilities. I’ve coordinated events for family and friends and have always loved it. People tell me I’m good at it, too. But is that enough for me to think about becoming a professional? How do I know if event planning is right for me?

-Rose O.

Dear Rose,

As much as I would love to tell you to follow your dreams, ignore all naysayers, and throw yourself into the event planning field with wild abandon, this is a good time to be prudent. Examine your feelings about event planning.

Getting into the business doesn’t mean you have to immediately quit your job and empty your savings to start your own company. It could mean starting small, getting the word out, setting up a website or blog to generate some interest, and seeing how things go.

Also, think about what you like about party planning. If you like it so much because it’s simply fun, this might not be the best move for you. One thing I’ve learned is that doing something for a living can really suck the fun out of things because you have to do it when you don’t feel like it, when you’re tired of it, and when the last thing you want to do is it.

If you’re challenged by the problems you have to solve, if you live for taking a scant budget and delivering a buffet of diamonds, if you love to work with people, even difficult ones, and want to see their dreams come alive in a gathering, event planning could work for you. What is it that you really love about event planning? What makes it enjoyable for you? What makes you want to be an event planner?

As for doubting your abilities, don’t. It’s good to know that you don’t know everything and be committed to constant improvement. It’s another thing to doubt what you actually can do. The parties for your friends and family have apparently not ended with everything on fire. People tell you that you do a good job. Don’t let your fears and insecurities get the better of you. Build yourself up when you need it. Should something go very wrong,  you will need to be able to solve the problem quickly and confidently. You can’t do this if you doubt your ability to even put on an event.

If you love event planning and are willing to work and sacrifice for your own business, you should give it everything you got. Click To Tweet

When it comes to certainty in life there simply is none. You could be in the best position to start an event planning business and fail, while someone else could have no money, no experience, no education, and succeed. If you love event planning and are willing to work and sacrifice for your own business, you should give it everything you got.

There are times it won’t be comfortable. There are times it won’t be easy. But if it’s what you truly want, don’t let anyone standing in your way. Good luck and happy planning!

-Star
