Christmas Eve 2018 Gathering: Fun for the Whole Family

I started planning for Christmas Eve before Thanksgiving was over. I just started dating someone who I adored and wanted to do something special for him and his parents, as well as my parents. So I went to Pinterest and started planning. Above all, I wanted to make sure my home was comfortable and welcoming, the food was good, and everyone has a great time.

Antipasto platter I prepared. My brie cutting leaves a lot to be desired, but I also I stopped calling it “antipasti” so I think that’s a win for everyone.

Beginning to plan a party is always a bit chaotic for me. I have a plethora of ideas and I end up dumping all of them out onto a page or a Pinterest board and ending up with so many activities, dishes, and fun that it would be impossible to do everything in one night. From there, I start to whittle away at things until I find a cohesive, coherent theme to latch onto. I like themes because it gives me something to draw from.

For example, the theme for this party was Italian hospitality. Meatballs were prepared, big hugs were given, and everyone had plenty to eat. When it came to the food, I paid particular attention to making it healthy, as it can be entirely too easy to rely on recipes that call for massive amounts of cheese and fat. In the end, this was the menu:

And if you’re wondering why I did a digital menu, it’s equal parts because I had too much time on my hands and I really love making menus.

All in all, the night was a success. The food was good, the conversation was lively, and everyone seemed comfortable. I also learned a lot about cooking that night as it had been almost a year since I had done a large menu and was concerned about my ability to make all of that food. Additionally, it occured to me to tone down my menus. Even though I was cooking for 6 people, there was no need to go quite so overboard on appetizers.

Although, let me assure you, the leftovers were amazing.
